How To Get A Diagnosis

On the island of Montreal, there are four hospitals that have been officially mandated to provide evaluations for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). However, these hospitals offer this service to children under 18 years old, and in some cases, under 6 years old only. Their waiting lists vary but generally range from six months up to 2 years.  During the evaluation process, a child will be assessed by a team of specialists and will undergo several tests, including an audiology test.

In Quebec, only psychiatrists and psychologists are authorized to provide an evaluation and diagnosis of ASD. Furthermore, evaluations by psychologists are only available in the private sector for a fee. When seeking an evaluation in the private sector, it is preferable to locate a psychologist that specializes in ASD evaluations.

As for adults seeking an evaluation for ASD, this service is primarily made possible through psychologists in the private sector for a fee.

There are however a few psychiatrists that have opened a private office for the purpose of providing evaluations for ASD, which are covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). However, since psychiatrists are specialist doctors, there are several criteria that must be met as well as providing a referral from your family doctor.
