THE ASD LEVEL 3 SEXUALITY SUPPORT GUIDE

Like all youth, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience puberty and the awakening of their sexuality starting from adolescence. However, some of their deficits can sometimes hinder the appropriate expression of their sexual needs and lead to problematic behaviors. These situations can result in negative consequences or place the individual in a vulnerable situation.

More specifically, adolescents and young adults with ASD who require very significant support, also known as Level 3 ASD, may exhibit behaviors that appear to be inappropriate expressions of sexual interest when they serve a completely different function. Consequently, intervening in promoting sexual well-being and sexuality education for these youth can pose a complex challenge.

The support guide for practice in school settings, “Sexualized Behaviors in Students with Level 3 ASD,” originated from a need expressed by the organization Autism Montreal, given the scarcity of sexuality education resources adapted for these youth. It was made possible with the support of the regional public health department of Montreal.

This guide is intended for school teams working with these individuals. Drawing on best practices, expert recommendations, and consultation with partners, its purpose is to support the creation of environments conducive to healthy and safe sexuality and to prevent disruptions in educational services due to inappropriate sexualized behaviors.
